Japan Shut Down Last Working Reactor

News article about all the nukes going offline.
First time in 42 years.
The picture below shows when each power plant went offline.
Post-nuclear party time!

Japan is shutting down its last working nuclear reactor as part of the safety drive imposed after the March 2011 tsunami triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima plant.
The closure of the third reactor at the Tomari plant in Hokkaido prefecture, northern Japan, means all of the country's 50 nuclear reactors have been taken offline, leaving the country with no nuclear-derived electricity for the first time since 1970.
Hokkaido Electric said it started lowering output from the reactor at 5pm (8am GMT). The unit should be shut down completely by the early hours of Sunday.
Hundreds of people marched through Tokyo waving banners to celebrate what they hope will be the end of nuclear power in Japan.
Until last year's earthquake and tsunami triggered radiation leaks at Tokyo Electric Power's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Japan was the world's third-biggest user of atomic energy.
All the reactors have been shut down for routine maintenance. They must withstand tests against earthquakes and tsunamis, and local authorities must give their consent in order for plants to restart.
The trade minister, Yukio Edano, and three other ministers have been trying to win public backing to restart two reactors taken offline at Kansai Electric Power's Ohi nuclear plant to help ease expected power shortages of nearly 20% in the summer. The reactors are the first to be considered for reactivation by the government, but it faces an uphill battle to win public support.
The last time Japan had no nuclear power was for five days in May 1970, when the only two existing reactors were shut for maintenance, according to the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan.

Nucler Free Japan

*English below

Happy Nuclear Free Japan day!!!!!
Tonight all nuclear power plants will be off-line in Japan.
Truly a historic moment for Japan, and for our nuclear world.

Now is the real test for the Japanese movement for nuclear free Japan,
and all those who understand and are concerned about nuclear power.
The critical question is can we be nuclear and fossil fuel free,
while developing a "healthy" economy.
Its going to be a bumpy road, but an extremely necessary one.

Tomorrow there will be a big celebration in Koenji, Tokyo.
One of the most diverse anti-nuclear collectives in Japan.
Old folks, children, house-wives, salary men, business owners,
punks, anarchists, etc. will parade with sound-cars, drumming brigades,
karaoke car, and some good ol' protest chanting.

Below are some posters for it, you can see the diversity.
The punk one was for the last protest/parade they organized.

For more info in Japanese

Lets keep the pressure up!

Some people may have moved on but Fukushima is still unresolved.
People continue to fight for compensation and the right to evacuate,
no clear plan for dealing with accumulating radioactive material,
and I just read that the Fukushima Unit 4 plant is in a dangerous state.

I will be doing a talk show with a well-established community activist,
Yoshiki from Kamogawa, Chiba at the Earth Day Tokyo event.
Hopefully I don't say anything that will get me in trouble.

I will be doing another workshop in Harajuku, Tokyo.
The area is known as the fashion district and the area is packed with trendy and strange looking youth (google "Harajuku fashion"). The location is a shop that sells "conscious" clothing along with eco-cosmetics, handmade crafts (beautiful rice bowls, metal-smithed silverware) and other unique products. They have a cool looking garden in front that has native plants and edibles, and is also left rather "natural".  I'm excited to see who will come. My goal is to diversify my audience.

-Patrick Whitefield

・Care for Earth
・Sharing of the Resources

Workshop

Introduction to Permaculture

A two day workshop taught by Dion Workman and Takuya Sasa (presented in English and Japanese)

Date:24th and 25th of March
Place:Nerima-ku, Tokyo
Fee:Suggested donation ¥10000 (*see below)
*Limited to 10 participants. To reserve a place please email tabi0419[at]gmail.com

The central aim of permaculture is to reduce our ecological impact. Or, more precisely, its to turn our negative ecological impact into a positive one.
- Patrick Whitefield
Permaculture is an ethically based design system that is about whole lifestyles. The ethics; Care for the Earth, Care for People, and Sharing of the Resources, form the foundation from which we design regenerative systems to realize health, sustainability and resiliency in our human communities and the wider communities of life of which we are a part.
In this workshop participants will be given the basic tools to begin applying permaculture design in their everyday lives.
Topics covered in this workshop will include:
・Principles of permaculture
・Traditional and contemporary Japanese practices that harmonize with the permaculture principles
・Understanding natural ecosystems as models for human habitats / Creation of human habitats with minimal disturbance of natural ecosystems
・Fundamental steps in the permaculture design process
・Urban application of permaculture design
・Practicing designing
・Hands-on small scale food production (growing micro greens and apartment compost in system)

Principles of permaculture
Traditional and contemporary Japanese practices that embody the permaculture principles
Understanding how ecosystems function
Providing for the needs of humans in ways that are in harmony with nature
Fundamental steps in the permaculture design process
Urban application of permaculture design
Hands-on small scale food production (growing microgreens and apartment composting systems)

*About the suggested donation:
We do not charge a fee for our courses because we want them to be accessible to everybody –  no matter what their financial situation. We do still have expenses though and put a great amount of time and energy to providing these courses. To allow us to keep providing workshops we ask that participants donate at a level they can comfortably afford. The amount we suggest for the donation reflects what we would likely charge were we to set a fee for the course. We gratefully accept donations larger than what we suggest and we also happily accept donations less than what we suggest. Most importantly, if you want to hear what we have to share then we want you to be on the course.

Invitation to Vipassana (the most compassionate thing I can share)

Life has been so busy!
Workshopping, grad school (four hours commute every week day), nuclear abolition (only one nuke running in Japan so the restart campaign is speeding up), helping form organizations like the Transition Town Suginami, No Nuke Youth Network, Green Party Youth team, etc has been crazy. Exciting and fulfilling but in many ways unhealthy.

I've also been visiting lots of alternative events and people in Kanto and Chuubu regions, and I really want to share the harvest with everybody. Natural farmers, traditional Japanese "permaculture" elders, "tune-in drop-out" artists and associated Nepalese and unusual abbot, a traditional Japanese theme park with very skilled and friendly craftspeople, and many serendipitous encounters.

I've been wanting to blog about all these amazing things and haven't had any time.
But, I have something important I really need to share.

Several weeks ago I came back from serving a vipassana retreat in Chiba. This was my second time at a vipassana center. The first time was in Kyoto last year, and it was truly an "enlightening" experience that has changed my life. Almost like the first time I really came to my senses.

I've had the great fortune to experience a "mini-Berkley in the 60s" at UC Santa Cruz right after 9/11 that propelled me far out of the mainstream world, the red pill. Since then, I've lived in the jungle of Costa Rica, visited the revolutionary countries of Cuba and the Zapatista caricol Oventik in Chiapas, spent two months at Deer Park monastery in San Diego, lived in a food forest at the Bullocks Permaculture Homestead for two seasons, participated in City Repair's Village Building Convergence, experienced the 3.11~ earthquakes and Fukushima disaster, and visited areas with over 2 micro-sieverts/h of radiation. All of these journeys have been amazingly transformative and I feel extremely priveleged to have experienced them.

Yet, nothing compares to the ten days of sitting at my first vipassana course in Kyoto. Those ten days are perhaps the most important ten days I have ever experienced. All I did was sit and observe myself from 4:30 am to 9 pm, and that was exactly what I needed. I was able to really be with my ego, release sources of suffering I have held on to (like bad memories), and experience, if just for a moment, pure love and happiness. It was extremely challenging and tiring to sit and observe myself for that long. But, by the seventh day, I started to just have an uninhibited smile. Nasty elements within myself would emerge, and as I objectively observed them they would slowly dissolve, leaving me feeling much lighter. The insight, the healing, and the joy I experienced has kept me meditating for at least one hour almost every day since.

I don't think I can do justice in my current state to explain what was so amazing, but its also not something you can understand intellectually. Vipassana must be experienced. Only then is it real.

So what is vipassana anyways?
I believe it means, insight into the true reality of nature, an ancient meditation technique rediscovered by  Buddha.

Below is a link for more info
http://www.dhamma.org/en/vipassana.shtml

There is no other gift I could share with you greater than vipassana.
Its not easy, but it is truly a path to real happiness and real freedom.
It took four people over three years to finally convince me to go.
I am extremely grateful to those people, Mark (Deer Park), Chad (Deer Park/UCSC farm), James (Bullocks), and Caitlin (Bullocks). Thank you.

One thing about vipassana retreats.
You cannot pay for it at the beginning of the retreat.
You need to complete the full ten days,
and if you have a desire for others to have a similar opportunity,
then you can pay how ever much you like.
Your retreat experience is paid for by others,
including the volunteer servers who are there
to ensure you have everything you need.
Its an amazing system.
All based on love and compassion.

Be Happy:)

Love,
Kai
