AVAAZ アヴァス

I want to give a shout out to AVAAZ.
I'm not a fan of internet click-button activism, but AVAAZ does address a good scope of timely and necessary issues while not overwhelming me with emails, and they have really good positive feedback. In some ways, it allows me to feel connected to the realities beyond my locality that really matter, and fulfill my ego's need to participate socio-political-environmental issues. Well, maybe not fulfill, but keeps that fire in me lit while I'm here learning and less actively involved in the larger world. Also, helps to keep me aware of global news in appropriate quality and quantity.

Who are they?
"Avaaz.org is a new global online advocacy community that brings people-powered politics to global decision-making. Avaaz—meaning "voice" in several European, Middle Eastern and Asian languages—was launched in January 2007 with a simple democratic mission: organize citizens everywhere to help close the gap between the world we have and the world most people want.

In 3 years, Avaaz has grown to 5.5 million members from every country on earth, becoming the largest global web movement in history. "

I also watch the daily show (news parody but often beautifully critical, relevant, and silly) and read the BBC to keep me up-to-date with a reality I often feel disconnected to. I would read DemocracyNow! with Amy Goodman as I think that is powerful free journalism, but its too depressing. The Guardian New paper was my favorite in England and its available online. I end up reading BBC because it isn't overwhelming and I like the layout. But, then I wonder how daily consumption of news helps me to become more peaceful and an effective change-maker? As the saying goes, history repeats itself, or news is recycled.


今日は僕の好きなネットを利用して政治社会環境活動を行っている団体をアバスを紹介したいと思います。島で毎日勉強しながら働いているから、あまり世界で繰り広げられているあらゆる活動に積極的に参加できない気がしています。なんとかアバスを通してちょっと自分の中の活動家の火を維持しているようなものです。ネットでボタンを押すだけ活動にはあまり関心がありませんが、アバスはうまい具合に様々な世界問題に対応しながら、上手に成功を積み重ねています。活動内容が限られている今の僕の状況には丁度いい団体です。でも、ボタンをクリックして納得する自分に気をつけないといけませんね。事件は。。。。現場で起きてるとかなんとか。

アヴァスの理念
