Thich Nhat Hanh Japan Tour 2011

I am happy to announce the 2011
Thich Nhat Hanh Japan tour!
(see below for more English)

http://thay.jp/

I first saw him at a People of Color retreat at Deer Park Monastery in San Diego. I was deeply impressed with how he walked, sat, and drank his tea. He seemed to have "arrived" at each moment with complete calmness, while radiating peaceful energy to the audience. His teachings flow with eloquent simplicity and profound depth that can be practiced by anybody. Being peace……that is the title of the first Thich Nhat Hanh book I read and I resonate with that title as I live each day.

I took interest in Thich Nhat Hanh while I was at UC Santa Cruz mentally struggling with 9/11 and the Bush/Cheney middle east invasion years. At the time I felt it was important to work as an "anti-war" activist, but it was draining, scary at times, and endless. And, while I respected my fellow activist friends who spent their free time working hard to end the war, sometimes it seemed that ending war was a righteous cause where people channeled their anger, suffering, and attraction toward violence. That was when I began to see the distinction between anti-war activism and peace activism. I read about Thich Nhat Hanh, who had been a peace activist during the Vietnam war. He founded the School of Youth for Social Services (SYSS), a grassroots relief organization that rebuilt bombed villages, set up schools, established medical centers, and resettled families left homeless during the war. Since then, he has continuously worked for peace that all can benefit from and that was what lured me toward him.

The community that has been inspired from Thich Naht Hanh is also amazing. A unique mix of Vietnamese (many who were refugees) , Westerners, Buddhists, Catholics, atheists, spiritual non-religious people, etc. It is pleasant to share intimate space with such a mix of people, practicing and not-practicing mindfulness, and watering seeds of engaged peace. From my travels, I feel that Deer Park has been the most impressive living example of an intentional community that I have ever experienced. They do have challenges and drama, but they benefit from a committed playful seriousness to practice peace as a community. A model ecovillage.

There is a lot I can say about Deer Park, but perhaps the most important thing I can share at this time is an invitation to visit them and spend a weekend or a week (or few weeks). A short visit is like a vacation from the crazy world for a conscious breath of fresh air, and a long stay is a chance to experience a brilliant alternative culture and an opportunity to get to know yourself deeper. Unlike how most people imagine "zen", they are quite relaxed and sitting sessions are only twice a day, they have very few rules, and are quite accommodating for individual needs. Thich Nhat Hanh teaches that everything can be a meditation, sitting, walking, eating, brushing your teeth, urinating, etc. So usually you sit first thing in the morning, have a silent breakfast, working meditation (cleaning, gardening, maintenance), walking/hiking meditation, lunch, drinking tea and talking, sports, evening sit, and a not-so-silent dinner. Monday is one of my favorite days, Lazy Day. The practice is to relax and do nothing, something many of us have difficulty with (not to be mistaken with drinking or watching TV all day). The only scheduled item is a Happiness Meeting, where we gather to share our happiness/gratitude of the day or week, and play music, have long philosophical conversations, play games, etc.

ANYWAYS, if you are in Japan, Thich Nhat Hanh will be doing a few lectures and retreats from April 24. For details and reservation check out:
http://thay.jp/about_tour_2011/about-japan-tour-2011

If you're interested in peace, cultural regeneration, ecovillages, zen, spirituality, happiness, or living better, I highly highly recommend checking it out. And definitely talk to the various English speaking monks and nuns as they are deep, funny, quirky, not-so-deep, and generally interesting "normal" people.

I think there is a lot we can learn from him and his community of practitioners about how to redesign our culture and way of life.

BONUS
Here are a few pictures from Deer Park
This was a sunset we watched during the Wake Up! Youth retreat at Deer Park. "Wake Up - Young Buddhists and non-Buddhists for a Healthy and Compassionate Society, is a world-wide network of young people practising the living art of mindfulness." (from the Wake-Up website http://www.wkup.org/). Thich Nhat Hanh's monasteries have scholarships for young people that covers up to 80% of the cost to stay there. You can also try negotiating if you are poor, they are a compassionate community.

I took this picture of Deer Park Monastery during a Lazy Day hike. Deer Park is surrounded by a nature reserve and those blue rectangles are solar arrays. Through the efforts of some conscious monks and lay people, they raised enough funds to put 3 sets of solar panels that generate 66-kilowatts! They are grid tied so they sell extra electricity to the municipality. They were also driving a bio-diesel car using the waste oil from the monastery, composting, gardening, native plant restoration, planting fruit trees, building doughnut berms around the fruit trees, digging swales, and last I heard they were trying to source more local organic produce. Yes, a modern day eco-monastery. Many of the efforts seem to happen because of specific people who are interested in these areas. One of my favorite American monks, Phap Luu and I had many discussions about permaculture and how to apply it to Deer Park and Plum Village (France).

Cooking beans and rice. Solar cookers that were utilized by a few Western monks but not by the Vietnamese monks or nuns (from what I saw). An important area for appropriate technology and introducing new ecological practices is to help make them familiar and appealing. Just because you give a cool tool doesn't mean people will use it. Culture is particularly important to consider in these circumstances. There were some interesting disagreements between the Western monks and the Vietnamese monks, such as cooking with MSG, white or brown rice, etc.

Big meditation hall designed by the abbot Phap Dung who had studied as an architect. There are monks and nuns from all different backgrounds, doctor, real-estate agent, military, composer, musician, activist, chef, boat-people (Vietnamese refugees), Buddhists since their teens, etc. Yes, I did hip hop/breakdance twice in the meditation hall. The last time was with the abbot who is quite the joker character. He says he is the laziest monk around....but he definitely has a lot of roles and responsibilities. The advice he has given me over the last few years has always been simple but powerful. That is sort of the theme of this practice. Simple and deep.

The Vietnamese monks are amazing at ping pong. Ping pong meditation. There used to be a monk that lived in Japan as a soldier and would organize volleyball games with the nuns. He also was a tea aficionado and we would go on long journeys of tea drinking and conversation.

Yes, its not your ordinary monastery, but their practice is real and solid.

A few easy practices that I would like to end with.

1. STOP once a day and take a few conscious breaths until you arrive to the present moment. You can do this randomly, at a certain time (eg 10:00am), when you stop at a red light, when you hear a bird chirp, anything you want. Just stop and breath until you are relaxed, you feel your feet on the ground, and experience each in and out breath. All you need is 1 minute a day, and a little bit of effort.

*a picture from Plum Village France that says, "stop".

2. Walk just a little slower than usual, or take slow walks every day. It easier when you don't have somewhere to go. One of my favorite songs that I try to share with everybody goes:

Happiness is here and now
I have dropped my worries
Nowhere to go, Nothing to do
No longer in a hurry

Happiness is here and now
I have dropped my worries
Somewhere to go, Something to do
But, I don't nee to hurry

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5kteKBfQ0I&feature=related

3. Express your appreciations to others, especially those you very close with and those you have difficulties with. Appreciations without conditions.....like a donation into a donation box. Doing it is what is important.

Thanks for reading,
and may you enjoy each breath that keeps you healthy and alive.
