Bareroot Fruit Tree Sale
Here is a display of apple, peach, plum, pear, shipova, and apricot trees.
We also had several varieties of blueberry too.
Its a better deal to buy bareroot trees in the winter,
since they are cheaper and you don't need to haul around the soil.

ブルーベリー数種類をベアルート（裸根）で提供しました。
ベアルート、つまり鉢も土もない植物だけで買った方が、
低価格で、運びやすい形で欲しい樹木を手に入れる事ができます。

この時期に使える材料は根菜（ごぼう、芋、ヤコン、ビーツ、人参、かぶ、ルタバガ、パースニップ）、
林檎と新鮮ケールでした。
結構色々選択肢があるものです。
冬でも食べ物で盛り上がっています。

Below are stored gobo (Japanese burdock that we grow in 50 gallon barrels), beats, turnips, yacon (a sweet tasting tuber from the Andes) and tons of tons of potatoes!

Doug giving the new interns and a few visitors a tour of the property.
This is the West hoop house which is full of exciting plants from around the world.
The PVC framework is coated with paint to prevent a reaction between
the polyethylene clear plastic and PVC pipes, and photodegradation.
There are two doors that are opened for ventilation,
managing optimum temperature, and inviting pollinators.
We have salvaged carpet laid out on the ground as sheet mulch to keep the hoop house clean.
The hoop houses are located right by our main area of activity,
so we can easily check up on it throughout the day.
Some fun plants in there are a nectarine tree, hardy maté, tea bush, loquat,
hardy kiwi, perennial brocoli, Jerusalem artichoke olive, wasabi, to name a few.
新しい研修生の為にダグがツアーを行っている様子です。
二つのポリハウスにはワシントン州では珍しい植物が共生しています。
僕が個人的に興味を持っているものは、
ネクタリン（実が沢山なっています）、ヤポンノキ（耐寒性マテ）、お茶、ビワ（寒すぎて殆ど実がなりませんが）、猿梨、多年草ブロッコリー、オリーブ（実る事は無いです）、山葵、キクイモ、ヤコンなどです。
ポリハウスのフレームになっているPVCパイプはポリエチレンと化学反応をおこさない様にペンキでコーティングされています。床にはシートマルチとして、捨てられていたカーペットを敷いています。裏側に敷くので帚で掃除もしやすいです。両側にドアがあり温度を手で調節します（天気によっては大変なときもあります）。また受粉してくれる虫達を誘う為にも開けたりします。アクセスしやすくする為にゾーン１（キッチン、アロハロッジ）のすぐ側に配置されています。

What once was a tranquil open space,
now taken over by permie developers.

Its interesting how much a roof can do for us.
Since rain sheds where we enter and exit,
we set a gutter to redirect the water to a more appropriate destination.
The buckets are full of grains, beans, etc.
There is a lot of plastic involved here,
and it'd be nice to see less of it.

雨の行方をコントロールするため、
排水溝も設置しました。
バケツの中には穀物、豆、砂糖などが入っています。
毎日肉体労働をしていて、
寒い中、野外で寝ているから、
エネルギー消費はすごいです。
そのエネルギー補給の為に食べ物はいつもいっぱいあります。
どうしても安くて便利なプラスチックが目立ちます。
減らしたいのですが
そう簡単には行きません。

James and C8 start us off by explaining how they designed the gardens,
and other important information for an amazing gardening experience.

Dinner at Yuriko's Japanese style.
In Japan it was (is?) common to serve meals on multiple plates.
Imagine the work involved in serving 9 people 7 dishes each.
For me, and my Japanese associates, separating dishes enhances the eating experience.
Its aesthetically pleasing and functional too.
Common elements are a bowl of rice, miso soup, tsukemono (japanese pickles),
main dish, cooked veggies, etc.
Each serving is generally small and
leaving food can be seen as bad manners or even disrespectful.
Eating is a great opportunity and challenging opportunity to practice,
"just enough".

It makes a big difference to use appropriate tools in the right way.

The Daver orients us on our irrigation system.
The set up goes: marsh water faucet, flex tube, filter (unit in his hands),
timer, and a y-splitter so two people can use it at the same time.

Daveが灌漑システムの組み立て方と、
メンテナンスの説明をしてくれました。
Machine Talk.
We use a wide range of machines.
Here Sam demonstrates how a gentleman would walk his lawnmower.
Thats right, we mow permaculture style.
Daver calls it the the transitional technology mulch combine.
Much of the orientation focuses on how to do maintenance,
safety, and how to increase the longevity of the machines.
The Bullocks do a lot of salvaging, combining, and repairing of tools and machines.
That's old school.

A great transition from the technical machine orientation,
the interns search intently for the remaining few like chickens.
Last year Yuriko watched from her house and laughed at us,
as people got more and more serious trying to find the remaining few.
Well, I guess Yuriko is just always laughing.

Establishing a new hive.
Sam and Simon prepare to release a hive Sam got from another island.
This setup is elevated from the ground to keep the hive protected from ants.
The legs of the frame are covered in Tangle Foot.
The pond-liner keeps the grass from growing, eliminating potential bridges for the ants.
Under the metal bowl is sugar water to feed the bees.
This is the second time I've seen bees packed in a mesh box.
The queen is separated into a smaller box of her own.
She is a critical element in this whole operation.
After carefully placing her between the frames in their new home,
the rest of the bees are dumped in.
Its a lot of bees!
We sprayed sugar water on them to calm them down during this process.
The queen will have to eat through a marshmellow tunnel to escape her isolation.

Last year a teenage Japanese girl did this for us.
This year its simon and 2 visitors from Canada worked it.
Basically, all foreign visitors are forced to thin gobo.
Its our way to say welcome to America.
Just kidding.
The Bullocks said that this is how they saw gobo grown in Hawaii,
big oil drums,
big gobo roots.

The coolant bypass hose on the LUV was leaking,
so we bought a new part to replace it.
It seemed to take much longer than people expected,
but such is the nature of many of the projects we do.

Potato planting.
We decreased our potato area to make more room to plant onions.
We planted a bunch of Red Norlands because its an early type,
since most of the interns will be gone by the time other varieties mature.
I think we ended up planting 3~4 other types,
including German Butterball, Purple Viking, Austrian Crescent.
They are gently placed in a trench and covered in soil sensitively,
so as not to break the sprouts.

今年は今の畝を減らして、
タマネギを増やす事にしました。
秋には研修生がいなくなるので、
収穫の早いレッド・ノーランドを多めに植えました。
他にはジャーマン・バターボール（めちゃめちゃ美味しい）、パープル・バイキング（中まで紫色）、オーストリア・クレシントなども育てます。

土で軽く被せました。
芽が伸びるとともに、
土で被せていきます。

Actually, they are making a environmental documentary called Wakan Tanka,
focusing on messages from "elders" to the youth.
They wanted to include the Bullocks as an example of those who practice sustainable living.
