Peace and Permaculture Dojo Tour and Culture (April 2017)

Come join me on a tour of the sprouting Peace and Permaculture Dojo!

This is where we are at six months into the project (here is the first English article about the Dojo). I just got back from a three month Asia and Australia tour so my friends have been moving things along. We have had an amazing daiku (carpenter) who has been intensely building a relationship with the kominka (old Japanese house). The 100 year-old wooden house is tilted, so everything that he fixed is fixed to the angle of the tilt. WOW! The building rests on stones as a foundation, and after so many years, some of the stones have sank, and the wooden building has tilted.

What we are growing here is peace culture. Japan is rapidly shifting from a pacifist country toward a more robust aggressive military power. US pressure on Japan to increase military capacity has been increasing and the Japanese military industries have probably been lobbying pretty hard for revamping their industry. This is a historic shift since the Japanese Military Empire was A-bombed by the US Military Empire. Our hope is that, like Gandhi's ashrams, the Possibility Alliance in Missouri, Casa De Paz in California, Plum Village, and many other places to practice peace, this can be part of the global peace infrastructure during the Great Turning.

Even without that, we are facing consistent high rates of suicide, school/business bullying, sexual harassment, depression, apathy, depopulation of rural areas (ghost-towning of Japanese villages), exponential growth of national debt, an unprecedented nuclear meltdown and growing hibakusha population, super-aging society, and loss of traditional skills and wisdom to name some of the big ones. Not a very hopeful time to be born in Japan....or the world. So, we're here to change that. I mean come on, is this the best we can do after thousands of years of human evolution?!!

It's also important for us to remember and renew interest in Japanese wisdom and design. There is something quite strange about spreading permaculture in a country that has had thousands of years of practicing it. At the same time, I can get more young people excited about self-sufficient (village
-scale) ecological living if I call it permaculture than if I call it "traditional Japanese living." There are lots of other reasons for calling what we do permaculture, but I won't go into that for now. What I will say is that, we are developing a culture that is strongly influenced by the values and worldviews of the liberal West Coast (USA), and the beautiful relationship-based culture of rural Japan.

Below is a video of the traditional community dance ritual called bon odori practice session we did at the Dojo. A group from the "Bay Area of Japan" (shonan, Kanagawa prefecture) reclaimed this tradition, made original music and movements based on peace and ecology, and have been spreading it throughout Japan. The group is called imajin bonbu (Imagine Dance Group ← Imagine is from John Lennon). We just finished the floors of the Dojo, so as a celebration event, we had a bon odori practice session and the founding of a local bon odori dance group.

*the video is in Japanese but toward the middle you can watch people practice/dance. The dance is not a performance dance, so practicing and dancing is pretty much the same. Anyone can join and leave at any time, and some communities will continue dancing for days. I heard that people go into a trance.

Here are some pictures from the DOJO

VISITING / HELPING
We're still no ready to officially receive guests, but if you have time and skills that we need, and we happen to be able to respond to your email/message, then something could happen. All we have right now is a roof and floor, compost toilet is almost done, and a rocket stove. Unfortunately, we don't have enough committed people on the ground to receive guests at the moment, and nobody lives at the Dojo yet. I want to say YES to everyone but we don't have the capacity to comfortably host yet....and every once in a while things work out so its not a definite NO either. I guess its always a MAYBE.

The IDEAL characteristics of a volunteer at the moment are
  • can speak basic Japanese: most of my team and the locals can only speak Japanese
  • patient: our response time is slow, and we aren't always able to respond (feel free to remind us)
  • self-sufficient: can take initiative and do a project, we also can't feed people yet like a WWOOF host, and it's basically like camping.
  • friendly: as in likes people, because we have lots of people coming through!
  • low or no expectations: the key to happiness
  • can stay about a week: it takes energy and time to orient people so realistically, a week is about how much time it takes for someone to "help" us. If you can commit for months that would be amazing, and if you can commit for life.....now we're talking!

Next year (2018), we will hopefully have more structure (social and physical), and be able to host people!

Love you all, may we all embody peace in every aspect of our lives

Tokyo Urban Permaculture Website is up and running

Hello from Union Station in Chicago

Just flew in a few days ago to visit my brother at Tillers International (check it out), where he is learning how to farm with oxen, handle horses, weld, make rope, brooms, the list goes on. Yesterday, we went into Detroit and had an insightful tour of economic collapse and urban grassroots renewal by Richard Feldman of the Boggs Center (check it out).  And now heading to the Possibility Alliance (check it out) where my brother used to live, and that I have heard much about. PA seems to be a hub of inspiring people living in sacred integrity with the earth. No electricity, no fossil fuels, simple hand-and-earth-made living. Hard to find much info on them online but I've come to realize that the really amazing things cannot be found easily online.

Meanwhile in Japan, we signed a lease to start a Peace (nonviolence) and Permaculture Dojo for 10 years in Isumi, Chiba prefecture. The educational programs, nonviolent communication 6-day immersion training and permaculture design course have already started on my friend Phil Cashman's site in Southern Chiba. We're going to start renovating the old Japanese thatch-roofed kominka (means old house) and turn it into a guesthouse by April 2017.

The 2.5 acre lot was an old Japanese homestead with a mini cow barn, bamboo grove, fruit trees, rice paddies, and garden. Still off-grid too! More to come about that, but I'm hoping for it to be a refuge and training site for ecologically rooted peace activists. Part of my vision for growing social change infrastructure in Japan. Really hoping to keep the country from fully engaging in war. But, the military-industrial-complex is powering up and the government is trying their best to change article 9 of our pacifist constitution. We're going to have to get really creative!

And we now have a website! Its mostly Japanese but I squeezed in some English.

Here is the English message

Welcome to you English-reading friend!

GRATITUDE FIRST
Thank you for finding your way to this website!
Thank you internet for making this connection possible!
Thank you Earth for being a most generous host!

ABOUT Tokyo Urban Permaculture
Tokyo Urban Permaculture (TUP) is a project that Kai Sawyer started around 2011. He was a second-year permaculture apprentice at the Bullocks Permaculture Homestead when the Fukushima nuclear meltdown tragically occurred. He decided to venture into the heart of the problem, Tokyo, to explore what seeds of hope he could grow in the busy radioactive world that he was born in.

You can read more about Kai and the Bullocks Permaculture Homestead on his first blog: Living Permaculture (about)

TUP started out as a place for Kai to share permaculture, compassionate communication (aka Nonviolent Communication), mindfulness (based on Thich Naht Hanh’s teachings), systems thinking through games, gift economy, and creative activism from primarily from the Bay Area of California. Workshops and presentations are primarily offered as a gift (more about the gift economy here) and anybody is welcome to join. Interventions and experiments such as guerrilla gardening, street meditations, youth climate change actions, and developing community gardens have been a central part of TUP activities.

2015
A crowd-sourced and crowd-funded book-like zine, Urban Permaculture Guide, was published and has become one of the most read permaculture books in Japan. See Living Permaculture (book) for more.

2016
After several years of soil-building, TUP has now blossomed into a community of social change growers exploring how can we co-create a culture that is moved by love for the earth and peace. Activities are not limited to “Tokyo”, “Urban”, or “Permaculture”, but the focus is on regenerating Tokyo into a urban culture that supports life rather than consuming it.

Some concrete projects include
this website!

  • nonviolent communication activist training retreat

  • PAWA Permaculture Design Course (with Phil Cashman and Kyle Holtzer)

  • Commune Garden: a rooftop community garden in Omotesando, Tokyo

  • Japan-centered permaculture design manual in Japanese (just sprouting)

  • Permaculture and Nonviolence Dojo for training Japanese activists (just sprouting)

For most recent updates see the Tokyo Urban Permaculture blog.

In some ways, TUP is just a name, a blog and website, a flag where people can come to for healing, hope, and action. The movement in Japan is much larger than TUP, and we are just another branch of an inspiring earth-wide movement. Nothing more exciting than this!

Since our focus is on supporting non-English-literate Japanese, most information is in Japanese…until we find someone passionate about translating for us. We love connecting with the English-literate too so feel free to write us or support us in any way! Just be warned that few of us are bilingual and so our responses might be rather slow. Reminders are welcome if you don’t get a response in a week or something like that. Since we are all volunteers slowly building up our social infrastructure, our capacity is still quite limited.

Thanks for reading and happy to be on the planet with you!

moved by love
Kai and the inspiring TUP team

JULY 24, 2016 Karma Kitchen Tokyo & My mini update

QUICK UPDATE (Karma Kitchen is below)

Hey all
So much to share but just haven't gotten around to posting in English. Sorry! But, if you use google translate and check out Tokyo Urban Permaculture, you might get a glimps....or maybe its finally time to learn Japanese!

I recently visited Satish Kumar at Schumacher College, spent over a week at Plum Village France, went to an AWAKIN CIRCLE in Paris, and finished it off with my first visit to Hunderwasserhaus! So much inspiration.

When I came back the community garden I decided to start the day before I left for my trip was bumpin with food! Yes! How to design yourself out of projects you start, that has been the edge I'm exploring. Nation elections were also happening so I helped anti-war, anti-nuclear power, peace and democracy advocate Miyake Yohei (reggae musician) try to get votes. He didn't make it but he has sparked an interesting youth-centered participatory democracy movement. And and, it looks like we are going to seal the deal soon with the landlord of the future Peace and Permaculture (nonviolence) Dojo in Chiba. Next year I'm hoping to take on some interns, and do a few longer-term workshops like a PDC, nonviolent communication retreat, mindfulness retreat, etc. Japan is happening!!!!!

Oh yeah, Tokyo Urban Permaculture Website is almost in full swing!

Love
Kai

Symphony of Peace Prayers 2015 (+ the Future of Leadership Forum)

English first

Today, I'm helping out with the Future Of Leadership Forum in Tokyo. This started last year when Lynn Twist came to Japan. Then tomorrow, my good friend and giftivist Yuka Saionji invited me to the event below. I'm just so grateful to have so many friends who live to bring peace in themselves and in the world. We have an abundance of creative young peacemakers!!! Thank you thank you thank you.

2015 Symphony of Peace Prayers ceremony, to be held on May 17, 2015 at Fuji Sanctuaryand around the world.

Every year, the SOPP at Fuji is a large-scale event, welcoming many thousands of participants along with an international group of prayer leaders and guests. This year, we are hosting a very special SOPP, in which leaders in many different fields-including politics, business, science, education, and the arts-will join with religious and spiritual leaders from around the world to celebrate the inauguration of the Fuji Declaration.

The Fuji Declaration is an international charter that seeks to awaken the sacred consciousness-the divine spark-in all humanity, in order to spur a transformation in our civilization and create a more peaceful, harmonious way of life on the planet Earth. The declaration has been endorsed by a wide range of prominent individuals around the world who support its ideals and goals.

As a global celebration of harmony and oneness where people from all different backgrounds join together to pray for peace and create a better world, the SOPP at Fuji Sanctuary was seen as the perfect occasion to inaugurate this historic document. Already, the staff of Byakko Shinko Kai are busy preparing and upgrading the grounds of Fuji Sanctuary to get ready for this momentous occasion!

SOPP2014-flags-captionAnd of course, the 2015 SOPP will include its core programs of ‘Praying with the Religions of the World’ and ‘Prayers for Peace in Each Country and Region’. We are looking forward to conducting these programs with the many new guests and participants who will be experiencing them for the first time. It is our hope that in launching the Fuji Declaration amidst the harmonious, unifying energy of the SOPP, the combined power of these two events will further expand their reach, urging humanity to awaken to its true, divine nature even one day sooner.

The 2015 SOPP ceremony at Fuji Sanctuary is free of charge and open to all. Please contact us if you are interested in attending or need further information. The ceremony will also be broadcast live over the internet, and we invite everyone to tune in. The link for the webcast will be posted here closer to May 17.

Even if you will not be in Japan this May, we hope you will take part in the SOPP by attending or organizing a local ceremony or prayer gathering. The SOPP website has a map with events taking place around the world, and many inspiring resources to help you create your own beautiful peace gathering. If you will be hosting an event or even praying at home on your own, please register on the SOPP website and let us know about it! The more people who take part, the stronger the vibrations of peace and harmony we will send out across the world!

May Peace Prevail on Earth!

FINALLY
Tokyo Urban Permaculture's first book is out!!!
!WoW!

This experiment in permaculture designing an urban permaculture book was an amazing success. The design challenge was how to make a Japanese urban permaculture book without actually writing it! And how to design a situation where people would share their gifts freely, and receive joy from it. This book was a way to put my experiences from permaculture, nonviolent communication, and gift economics to practice. I don't fully understand how it all happened but now there is an amazing book, crowd-sourced, crowd-funded, and exceptionally beautiful. A glorified zine!

Over 20 professional editors, writers, and illustrators were involved in this project, many who gifted their work, and about 380 people funded this project. It is a 400 person book project. And, while the book is self-published, my friends at MM books are leveraging their social capital to place our books at sympathetic (empathetic?) stores! Not only that, we are asking the stores to buy the books from us, meaning before its on the shelves, we've already sold them! I don't even know who is involved and doing what anymore. Its a project that keeps giving. And isn't that the world we want to live in? To plant seeds and harvest abundance? Thats the world I want to live in.

I hope this will revolutionize the Japanese permaculture movement, and transform the urban cultural landscape. The party continues....

PS If you want to learn about my ideas on gift economy and giftivism click here

PPS I'm doing an impromptu book release party in the Bay Area at the beginning of February 2015. I'm bringing about 15 copies.

(R)evolution

that will be one of the many examples for Japanese urban permaculture.

Here are some samples from the book.
*there are a total of 184 pages.....Wow!

Below is what I wrote on 11/11/2014 in the midst of the crowd-funding campaign for my/our book. It gives some context about what this was all about.

Hi all,
this is one of my most exciting projects that I have embarked on. A crowd-sourced, crowd-funded, gift economy style urban permaculture book. The main goal was to create a book through permaculture design about urban permaculture and cultural change. As co-existence revolutionary (my title in Japanese), I'm really trying to find ways to inspire people to live compassionately and creatively so that we can care for all beings. I want to present it attractively, I want it to be oozing with FUN, and I want people to know that its happening!!!

The chapters are EDIBLE, DIY, EDGE, GIFT, STOP. These are the hot topics of my work and what I see in the sphere of global activism. From guerrilla seed planting to burning man to meditation flash mobs. All the fun but deeply meaningful sprouts of hope that I see all over the world. I want to share it far and wide, and I'm starting with Japanese in urban contexts. Its such an untapped resource!

If you want to support me to make this book happen, we are currently trying to raise 2,000,000 yen, roughly $20,000, to self-publish. We reached our first goal of 1,500,000 yen a couple of weeks ago (woohoo!), but realized that the total cost is closer to 2,000,000 yen (thats why it says we are beyond 100% of our goal). Just a week left to go!!!

The crowd-funding site unfortunately has no easy way for non-Japanese contributions so if you want to support me, please send me a donation via paypal. If you would like to contribute to the  and receive a book, please send me $35+ and your address! I'll send it by mid-Febuary.

TOKYO URBAN PERMACULTURE BOOK PROJECT

-over 30 people involved, most are professional gifting their time and skills
-includes all the solutions that I'm spreading, permaculture, mindfulness, Nonviolent Communication, gift economy, and political activism
-conversations with leading activists in each of those fields in Japan
-we will self-publish with the support of crowd-funders to make this a people's project and keep the gifts flowing.

Book Intro
(the actual book is in Japanese)

This book is an invitation to change the world that we live in. It was not created to merely be a consumable product, but designed as a tool to inspire compassionate action.  I want you to join me, and the millions of people around the world, who are dedicating their lives to practicing compassion for all beings. Our goal is to co-create a future where all people and all life matters—a world that is ecologically sustainable, socially just, and spiritually fulfilling.  I want each reader to know that you are invited on this exciting adventure, and that your diverse gifts are essential for this movement of love to flourish. And, we’re going to have fun!

The following pages are a collection of “seeds” with an enormous amount of potential to grow. In order to unleash that potential, the seeds need to planted, the sprouts to be watered, and the fruits to be celebrated. It’s all experimental and if things don’t go exactly as expected, let’s harvest the learning! This process of cultivating our consciousness is at the heart of our (r)evolution.

Youth Demonstration against Secret Protection Law

Hello hello
So much going on as usual! Japan and the world is changing rapidly, and I get to be in the exquisite interaction of chaos and harmony.

I have a passion for youth activism, and have kept my antennas out for youth driven movements in Japan, particularly around nuclear power. I offer free training and donation based workshops in hope that I can help enhance their ability to make change. One of my favorites is going on retreat into the only village in Tokyo (up in the mountains), and spend two days doing Nonviolent communication (NVC) workshops, living NVC together, and other fun activities such as building a fire together for the traditional bath. Super fun.

Anyways, some of those friends are working on getting more students involved in activism, and most recently, protesting the secrecy law (aka secret protection law) that has just passed. Their adding a hip hop flare to the protest scene, and making it more fashionable. We'll see how it grows. The media and government are advertising the threat of China, pushing for a bigger military budget, and passing laws that are important for a military agenda. Here we go again.

PS I've been really busy with my Japanese targeted projects so my Living Permaculture blog hasn't been as active. If you want to see what I'm up to, check out Tokyo Urban Permaculture. You might need a human or robotic translator though.

about SASPL
