Tokyo Sardine Train

I ride trains in Tokyo. Every once in a while, I accidentally end up on one of the sardine trains. Depending on my mood, I either laugh at the absurdity of this reality, or I get stressed out at the dehumanizing experience.

Once in the train you cannot move. If your hand accidently is stuck on someones butt, it stays there. If you move it, it'll be more suspicious. When the door opens, you are violently launched out by the intense current of human beings.

Can you imagine doing this every day?

Wow.

Just had to laugh watching this. My friend does part-time work as a rush hour "pusher-man"

Being Alive

Despite Fukushima, mass corruption, pollution, propaganda, war, climate change, financial collapse, the end of the fossil fuel party, gross global inequality, depression.....

I feel really good today.
I am alive....
....and grateful
so much potential in being alive.

I realized I love people today.
I love people,
I love our home earth,
I love to love.
I love Al Green.

I tend to forget why I'm alive.
why I'm always wanting to engage with the world.
I'm exploring love,
practicing love,
learning from love,
and trying to be love.

Sustainability is rooted in love for me.
Activism is rooted in love.
So what is love?
I don't really know....
....but it feels revolutionary.

Thank you for being alive

Blog Blog Blog. A bloggers reflections.

I never thought I'd become a blogger. Especially after going through a rapid process of simplifying my life because of activism-burnout that I experienced in 2006. My email box is still full of over 1000 unopened emails during my UC Santa Cruz organizing days. Its overwhelming to even think about looking through those.

But, what started out as an experiment to explore new technology and poke fun at my primitive self, has now become a regular practice in my daily life. It has been an amazing tool to organise my thoughts, stay connected with friends (since I don't facebook), distribute "valuable" information, and network with people. All without the stress of external deadlines, quality standards, and costs.

This blog started as a way to learn about blogging through posting pictures and my notes from life at the Bullocks Permaculture Homestead. One of my main goals has been to provide more info about permaculture in Japanese. But, I also wanted to spread the love to my non-Japanese readers, as I believe the knowledge and experience at the Bullocks is an invaluable resource for creating a sustainable world.

Now, the blog is a bit of a mess, but a good representation of my cluttery active mind.
I believe the main topics are:

  • Permaculture, natural farming and sustainable living
  • Activism
  • Mindfulness and Engaged Buddhism
  • Nukes
  • War and Peace
  • Systems sciences
  • Consumer culture and cultural change
Its all related.

Realizing that I still have a lot to learn about blogging, and that this blog was getting a little chaotic, I decided to start new blogs for new projects. Now I have a total of four blogs and I'm cautiously considering another. Here is the critical question, is the blog a tool that I benefit from, or is the tool now controlling my life?

I chose not to own a car, a cell phone (until I moved to Tokyo a couple months ago), a facebook account, etc. because they seemed to be controlling how people around me lived. People talked of how they couldn't imagine life without these tools. But, my life has been great without owning those things. And now that I have a cell phone, I can't quite say if my life is better or worse. It's convenient in some ways, and inconvenient in other ways. But I  know I can live without it, and be happy.

I spend a lot of time blogging. And thinking about blogging.
For now, it seems like a good way to use my time and energy,
especially now that I live in the hyper-urban tragedy known as Tokyo.

But, I'm not sure how I would feel if the internet went down,
and if I could no longer access my blog, email, and all the virtual info that I depend on.
Losing access to a "free" internet could happen, and perhaps not too long from now.

This blog, like many others, started out with a thought that I would write a quick article and list my blogs, and here I am 40+ minutes later still typing. Believe it or not, some articles take several hours.

Da Otha Blogz

1. Tokyo Urban Permaculture
This is basically a website for my Tokyo regeneration project. It's primarily in Japanese, but I just added a English page, other pages, and pictures. Initially I was going to try a word.press website but it looked like a little more work than I was prepared to do.

2. Occupy Kasumigaseki Japan
I wanted to create a bilingual site to do outreach for the occupy kasumigaseki movement. It was also an opportunity to explore a new tool, tumblr. I was hoping to get more people involved but it hasn't happened yet. Like blogger, tumblr is really easy to use but quite a different format.

3. Eco Resources Library
I haven't mentioned this blog yet, but it exists. It's a personal data storage site. Sort of like bookmarks, but with more visual info.  I just come across an overwhelming amount of cool info and I've been having a hard time keeping track. Some of these resources stay in my inbox and add to the 1700 unopened emails, some become another unapplealing bookmark, and others disappear back into the info abyss. So, I decided to create a virtual data base to organize them quickly and not have to worry about them anymore. That way other people can also benefit. Its a diverse mix of great websites and associated ideas and resources. Many come from the only blog I got tricked into following:
http://makewealthhistory.org/  It's really well done, much better than anything I do.

What happened to permaculture?

What happened to permaculture?
I thought this was a permaculture blog?
Why all this protest talk?

Its all part of the global sustainability movement,
rooted in grassroots efforts to redefine our cultural paradigm.
Whether it be people growing food, withdrawing from consumerism,
challenging corrupt governments and seemingly omnipotent corporations,
protesting on the streets, dumpster diving, starting ecovillages,
its all part of an emerging global revolution to reconnect with life.

An awakening to the reality that if we don't change,
we will destroy each other and our life-support system,
in the name of jobs, economy, and "national security".

Some of us experience the severity of the situation much more than others.
I imagine the increasing ecological and geo-political refugees all over the world,
and other victims of conflict are some of the people who experience it the hardest.
And even if you are living in a wonderful ecovillage
or are wealthy enough to stay away from most dangers,
like radioactive rain,
all of us will get a dose of the unpleasantness at some point.
Radiation and pollution knows no boarders or social-class.

My conviction is that,
we can change the situation,
but it really needs to be a big WE.
Yes we can!
But only if WE DO IT.
Not Obama, not Democrats, not the Tea Party, not the UN, not Green Peace, etc,
you, me, and everybody else.

Nobody can do it for us.

And as much as much as recycling, growing food, voting, buying local,
is good and perhaps a step in the right direction,
the toxic currents in our international political-economic and cultural systems,
need to be stopped and radically transformed.
We need to decentralise political-economic power.
Corruption thrives on concentrated power,
like disease in a pool of factory farmed hog shit.

If 9/11, the wars in the middle east, the economic crash,
bailing out the banks that gambled away our future,
bailing out the energy company that was too cheap to build a tsunami barrier high enough as instructed, and being irradiated by nuclear power plants that are supposedly safe and eco,
is not enough an impetus to stop our daily routine and take drastic action,
then my question is, what will?

Thats my thought process at the moment.
I am angry about the way things are.
A healthy anger.
I can go about my daily tasks,
enjoy food,
laugh,
love,
and still be aware that there is good reason to be angry.

Thats my rant of the week.
its not eloquent nor well thought out,
but it is what it is,
emotionful thoughts.

And I am genuinely interested in learning about how we can change this reality,
and how we can get more people proactively involved.

I need to go take my medication now.
Shower, kyoho grapes, and sunlight!

Quotes on Love

Hello friends,
I just got back from the Village Building Convergence and I am super-charged!
Such an amazing experience of permaculture, community and cultural revolution.
City Repair is definitely worth seeking out.
I have tons of pictures and videos but it will take a while to sort through :(

At the moment, I am composing a graduate research proposal
for my University of Tokyo grad school application.
I've been reading from a book that has been extremely thought provoking,
and I just came across a few passages,
in a chapter titled Consumption: A Symptom of Addiction,
about LOVE:

Love is one of those "things" that Fromm claims
we now seek to have instead of to be.

Loving takes commitment and much more;
it is hard work, and the results do not often show up immediately.

(from Sustainability by Design - John R. Ehrenfeld)

and here is one he included in a chapter titled,
A Radical Notion of Sustainability.

Happiness is the absence of the striving for happiness
-Zhuang Zhou

The surreal world....

I was just thinking about my connection to the greater world,
and I was reminded of how intense life has been since I left Japan for college.
I arrived to the US in 2001, just before 9/11 happened.

Since then,
I have lived in a country openly at war in various middle east countries since.
This country has been actively at war since i got here!
Well, some argue the US has always been at war with some unfortunate country.

I think to myself,
what is my connection to this war?
What is my role and responsibility in this?
It's such a bewildering event.
I never thought of war as something that still exists until i came to the US.

After years of updating myself on faraway global disasters around the world through the BBC,
like earthquakes, genocide, invasions, floods, tsunamis, food shortages, assassinations, terrorist attacks, revolutions, etc,
I found myself in Japan during a short 3 months visit,
in the midst of a devastating earthquake,
and a nuclear disaster that has alarmed nations around the globe.

It all feels surreal.
War, nuclear disaster, global climate instability, giant earthquakes,
economic collapse, political turmoil.
But, I guess thats life in the modern world.
What a world to inherit....

My current plan is to fly back to Japan to reunite with my partner in August,
and attend grad school in Tokyo to study how to nurture a culture of sustainability.
I occasionally think about how I am committing to life near an escalating nuclear disaster,
in a region that is due for a similar sized earthquake,
and designed to be a large-scale tragedy.
Sometimes it feels like I am preparing to die.
It's consoling to know that
Japan is where i would like to return to the earth.

On a slightly different note,
two heavily circulated quotes have recently captivated my mind.

The world we have created is a product of our thinking; it cannot be changed without changing our thinking.

you must be the change you wish to see in the world

That excites me.
I really feel like this is a good time to be alive.
Its time to co-create a better world,
one that fulfils our real needs.
What could be better than that?
Lets do it!

You might be a bliss ranger if.......

I've been thing of an easy way to share the culture of the Bullocks Bliss Rangers,
as I find it unique, interesting, and (mostly enjoyable).
In fact, I hope some of these practices permeate mainstream culture.
Anyway, here's a new approach....

You might be a bliss ranger if.....

 you carry around garden tools,
like a grafting knife, or snips, or pruning saw,
 (probably Felco)
and if you are really bad ass,
 a kama.

you walk around places thinking about what fruit trees
you could be planting or grafting.

 when you need to pee,
you look for a fruit tree or nitrogen loving plant to fertilize.

BONUS
you might be a 2010 bliss ranger if.......

you have a special relationship with tahini.

Back in the USA

Back to the empire and now back to the Bullocks Permaculture paradise.
Its a weird experience leaving a country (and my partner) in the midst of a national emergency,
and return to a nation at war in at least 3 different countries with no definite end in sight.
The world is a trippy place.

It almost seems like these are events that merely exist inside the TV and other forms of media.
Did the US missile strikes in Libya noticeably affect you?
I didn't feel it.
I wonder when the US will stop bombing other countries.
What year has the US NOT engaged in war or covert operations?
I remember Michael Franti singing,
"you can bomb the world to pieces, but you can't bomb the world to peace."

I love the US though.
The people, the landscape, the diversity.
It's impressive.
I'm glad to be back.
Land of the free......
Even though this "free" is not for everybody and sometimes at the cost of others' freedom,
I thrive in it and the "repression" based culture of Japan loses its appeal.
Maybe its not that extreme.

Here is something I noticed transitioning from Tokyo to San Francisco....
But first, what do you notice about the two trains?

San Francisco BART

Japan Rail Tokyo

It might be hard to notice but the JR train is littered decorated with advertisements everywhere your eye might try to rest except the ground. There are also two TVs above each door, one for the map and train announcements, the other for news updates and advertisements. It might not be that effective though since many seem to immediately opent their state-of-the-art cell phones and play with that until they exit. The JR train is also much cleaner looking and super bright.

It feels really liberating not to be constantly exposed to advertisements. Thats what I really found pleasant about Cuba.....no ads......well except for Nestle and the revolution. So, the BART was a refreshing ride after leaving Japan, although it definitely felt mankier and I felt watchedー>

Bonus: Rush hour in Tokyo

I'm really really glad to be back at the Bullocks.
It is truly amazing here.
Beautiful people, lovely living.

Earthquake Japan 2011

This is trippy.
Aftershocks continue daily,
in Tokyo planned regional blackouts are happening,
as people try to go to work as usual
huge crowds accumulate at train stations where train numbers have been cut.

On the news,
we are fed little by little about the failing nuclear power plants.
Sounds pretty bad.
Breaking news, another tsunami is coming.....
15 minute warning.

As I think about the likely potentials of an awaited big earthquake around Tokyo,
and a severe nuclear disaster,
I find myself quite calm and detached from the whole situation.
Maybe because I haven't directly experienced the devastation,
yet.

Here's another tremor....3rd or 4th one of the day.

Nowhere really safe i can go.

Breaking news, another hydrogen explosion at the nuclear power plant.

Interesting time to be alive.
I guess I just have to be ready to die at any time,
but that should really be a daily practice.
You never know when you'll die.

I remember a really old Vietnamese monk saying,
"if you don't know how to die, you don't know how to live."

& Presentation

PRESENTATION
While I'm in Tokyo I would love to present on my travels and work on permaculture and the sustainability movement in the US and beyond. From journeys in Central America and Cuba, to sustainability movement in US universities, different garden/farm-related projects, urban regeneration projects (e.g. Transition Town Movement and City Repair Project), and of course Permaculture. I have a few slideshows put together and lots of pictures yet to be organized. Feel free to contact me about it as I love sharing this stuff and its an essential part of my activism. Planting seeds of mental revolution and cultural evolution.

I`m also looking for a job while I`m here so if you have any good leads please let me know. Living in Tokyo is proving to be quite financially hard, especially since I can't grow my own food! yet.

Politik Interlude

An invitation to resist corporate and government control over information and civil deceit. Avaaz has an online petition with the goal to get a million signatures supporting WikiLeaks. Whether you sign or not, I highly recommend reading up about the WikiLeaks spectacle. Its impressive that they took on many world governments, especially the US.....a government unfortunately now famous for bending and breaking their own laws and values, torture, and "accidental" deaths. My hope is that WikiLeaks does not get shut down, and that freedom of the press is protected and strengthened. But, thats my view and you must have your own. I can say with confidence that this is a major historical event that will have serious implications for all of our futures. If you haven't seen it yet, check out Noamy's Manufactured Consent video (available to view online) and/or book, as it is related to the WikiLeaks situation and is a great source for reinforcing your media literacy skills. Plus Noam Chomsky is just a cool dude as far as academics go.

Here is what Avaaz has to say:
The massive campaign of intimidation against WikiLeaks is sending a chill through free press advocates everywhere.

Legal experts say WikiLeaks has likely broken no laws. Yet top US politicians have called it a terrorist group and commentators have urged assassination of its staff. The organization has come under massive government and corporate attack, but WikiLeaks is only publishing information provided by a whistleblower. And it has partnered with the world's leading newspapers (NYT, Guardian, Spiegel etc) to carefully vet the information it publishes.

The massive extra-judicial intimidation of WikiLeaks is an attack on democracy. We urgently need a public outcry for freedom of the press and expression. Sign the petition to stop the crackdown and forward this email to everyone -- let's get to 1 million voices and take out full page ads in US newspapers this week!

http://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/?vl

WikiLeaks isn't acting alone -- it's partnered with the top newspapers in the world (New York Times, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, etc) to carefully review 250,000 US diplomatic cables and remove any information that it is irresponsible to publish. Only 800 cables have been published so far. Past WikiLeaks publications have exposed government-backed torture, the murder of innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, and corporate corruption.

The US government is currently pursuing all legal avenues to stop WikiLeaks from publishing more cables, but the laws of democracies protect freedom of the press. The US and other governments may not like the laws that protect our freedom of expression, but that's exactly why it's so important that we have them, and why only a democratic process can change them.

Reasonable people can disagree on whether WikiLeaks and the leading newspapers it's partnered with are releasing more information than the public should see. Whether the releases undermine diplomatic confidentiality and whether that's a good thing. Whether WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has the personal character of a hero or a villain. But none of this justifies a vicious campaign of intimidation to silence a legal media outlet by governments and corporations. Click below to join the call to stop the crackdown:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/?vl

Ever wonder why the media so rarely gives the full story of what happens behind the scenes? This is why - because when they do, governments can be vicious in their response. And when that happens, it's up to the public to stand up for our democratic rights to a free press and freedom of expression. Never has there been a more vital time for us to do so.

Buy Nothing Day (無買日?)

Happy Thanks Giving!!!

A day of appreciating each other, spending time with family, and giving thanks.
Who/what do you have gratitude for?
(for those who are passionate about the Native American condition, livelihoods of industrially produced turkeys, and other issues also associated to Thanks Giving, lets share that with more and more people in a nourishing way so we can water the seeds of compassion and understanding that everyone can participate in:) I'm working on it.....its definitely an art that I am not that good at :( yet.

Tomorrow (for America) is Buy Nothing Day!!!! Woohoo. A day to continue to appreciate family and human values, and take a pause from the shopping frenzy (now known as "Black Friday") that has become a recent addition to American culture. Is not the greatest gift we can give to each other to BE with them? To love, and truly be present in each others lives? To channel our passion into a "gift" that we can share with those we love? And remember that before things were made cheaply in China (and other countries) out of plastic, we had a culture of making things ourselves? Our grandparents probably remember a time like that.
Its worth a few seconds of thought and reflection. One day of non-buying is symbolic, and a daily practice non-buying is a way of life. Perhaps this will become a populist movement. Buy less Make more. Taking back culture from corporations and an economic system that is too complex for most to understand. A cultural regeneration is a foot.

For all other countries, lets call them un-American countries:),
Buy Nothing Day is the 27th.

There are creative, fun, charitable, revolutionary events all over the world, probably one near you. Or you can start one.

Last year I had the opportunity to volunteer for the Freeconomy Feastival 2009 in Bristol, UK. I think we ended up feeding over 250 people with foraged and waste food. a 3 course meal of spontaneous homemade cuisine. We had workshops, speakers, documentary screenings, clothing swap, free store, and lots of cool people. Very inspiring event.....reminds me of San Francisco.

Here is the main organizer, a man who lived without using money for one year, Mark Boyle's commentary on the event: http://www.justfortheloveofit.org/blog-1835~the-freeconomy-freastival-2009
The BBC presents a little more dry version of the event for those who like the mainstream view 'Freegan' Mark Boyle hosts a feast of foraged food -CLICK-

The War Industry

Apologies for not updating much but I am about to take off to my next adventure. Lots of half written pieces.....also know as clutter.

Anyways, doesn't this seem crazy?!
BBC today

US confirms $60bn plan to sell Saudi Arabia arms

State department official Andrew Shapiro on the "tremendous significance" of the sale
US officials have confirmed they intend to sell $60bn (£38bn) of arms to Saudi Arabia.....If completed, it could be the most lucrative single arms deal in US history and could support 75,000 jobs.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11587348

Job-creation.
The military-industrial complex in your face.
and who will be the target for $60bn worth of weapons?

and also in the news.....

China is trying to prevent a report which says Chinese bullets have been used against peacekeepers in Darfur from being published
....
The report says that a dozen different brands of Chinese bullet casings have been found in Darfur, some at sites where attacks on UN troops took place
...
The panel has previously claimed that large amounts of foreign arms and ammunition are being trafficked into Darfur and fuelling the conflict between the government and rebel groups
...
The UN says that about 300,000 people have been killed in Darfur and more than 2.6 million displaced since rebels took up arms there in 2003.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-11593516

Weapons for wars in developing countries are made in our country and sold to corrupt governments and militant groups. Please just think about that for a second, because it just doesn't seem to me like we can dismiss that reality and continue on with our everyday lives. Does this not warrant a pause? A desire? An action and then a chain of actions?

And what happens to those jobs when they finish making the weapons for the Saudi's? In this design, peace in the middle east or Saudi post peak oil will lead to the loss of 75,000 jobs (of course its a simplification but perhaps with some truth in it).

If you are interested in more about this subject, check out
Stockholm International Peace Research Institute

Also, if you haven't already seen the documentaries Why We Fight and Blow Back, I highly recommend it to put perspective on this issue. They are quite well done.
You can watch it here

Super cool site where you can watch tons of amazing and mediocre documentaries.

I want to recommend a bunch of documentaries but I feel like planting seeds for WE: Arundhati Roy. Also available at freedocumentaries.com. She will take you on a journey of heartful lyrical eloquence about our world and expose the injustices while elevating our souls for a better future. We.

Dependencies: Oil

An invitation into thought.

What would happen to your life if tomorrow morning gas prices doubled indefinitely?

Then, eventually became unavailable?

What would happen to your community? How will your life change?
Is this a problem for you or an opportunity?

Present Moment interlude

I saw this at Deer Park Monastery when I went for a quick visit with my parents last week. What a great poster! Special thanks to Phap Dung (the Abbot in the middle of the picture) for all your support and Ron Forster for making this poster.

Segway Doug

....no, the Bullocks don't own one of these. This was brought by one of our recent guests.
But wouldn't that be trippy to be on a farm where everyone is zooming around on Segways. Bullocks gone techno.
