To help transition Japan to a peace promoting post-carbon country while enjoying every step of the process.

Australian urban permy will be doing two holistic permaculture workshops this weekend in Tokyo. She does very artistically inspired permaculture that I hope permeates the permaculture movement. Beauty is such a powerful attractor.
It has been a blessing to meet Cecilia as she has very similar interest as I (permaculture in Tokyo, social permaculture and communication, alternative economic systems). I'm hoping to do a big permaculture event in Tokyo with Dion from Shikigami (Izu), Ken Elwood (adams guild, Nagoya), Cecilia, and I. An opportunity to showcase and explore the diversity of international permies living permaculture in Japan. Stay tuned.
Here are some fun and easy to understand videos about capitalism and money. I'm not exactly sure how accurately these videos reflect reality, and the impacts it has on viewers (ie stimulate people to take effective action), but I like them and they definitely have an influence on my world view.
(it also makes for an easy blog entry:)
I've been reading about Marx, Gramsci, Transition Towns, ecopedagogy, etc. trying to figure out what would be a meaningful and fun research topic for the Graduate Program in Sustainability Science at University of Tokyo. It's a challenge since the key word here is "science" and the faculty are almost all Japanese natural science researchers. Hence, they seem to like numbers (quantitative data) and generally encourage pro-business pro-capitalism research. (Big) business, innovation, and technology for a sustainable future! But, something seems wrong here. Somehow I probably have to make a solid case using academic discourse that is easy for them to understand and accept. hmmmmm....
Related to that, I've been wondering about what the socio-political implications of permaculture are? It seems like permaculture is largely a movement away from politics and mainstream society, although City Repair, liberation permaculture, and maybe the students who were awarded by Obama for permaculture activities recently, seem like a new wave of a more socio-politically engaged group of permies. What does permaculture have to offer in terms of transforming the larger oppressive systems that dominate us? Or is that beyond the scope of permaculture?
Just some thoughts.
Ok, so here are the videos.
First off, The Impossible Hamster by the New Economics Foundation (NEF).
If capitalism was a hamster....cute!!!
Who Killed Economic Growth by the Post Carbon Institute (PCI). Another well-made video explaining the impossibility of economic growth through a simplified history of capitalism and fossil fuels. Richard Heinberg who is the narrator of the video recently published a books called "The End of Growth".
Finally, or else I'll never get anything done, the Crisis of Capitalism by the Royal Society for the Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce (RSA). This video features a graphic facilitator animating a talk by David Harvey. Harvey summarizes various theories by others on why our economy is in crisis, then presents his own Marxist analysis and what we should do to change things.
The next Drums of Fury demonstration is TOMORROW (6.6.12) starting at Hibiya Park at 18:45.
Its a fun scene and I say there is nothing like a good ol drum protest. There will be drummers, dancers, clowns, police, weirdos, salary men, maybe a kid or two, and non-Japanese. Unfortunately, I have to miss this one, but I highly recommend it. You can also check out the occupation of METI since its in the neighborhood. Dress up or down, bring some flare, lights, food, water, and party on the streets! Liberation, protest, and fun.
There will be a All Transition Japan event titled, "How to start a Transition Town Symposium." Should be fun. The Japanese Transition Town movement is still small, and I have my criticisms about the TT movement in general, but I also have a lot of hope for it. The event will start with an explanation of TT, then a showing of In Transition 2.0, and introductions from various TTs in Japan. TT Suginami that some friends and I started will also present, but we are sort of not following the protocol so we'll see what happens. We turned into a rebel TT, but with lovely intentions:)
TT and the Occupy movement are probably the most interesting movements coming out of the West at the moment. Lets see how we can make some long lasting change that really benefits the 99%.
The government is moving forward with restarts at Oi, in Fukui Prefecture. This is a historic moment for Japan and the world.
The Occupation in front of the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry is preparing buses to go to Fukui to protest. Other groups are also mobilizing transportation. We will see if any new companies are brave enough to report on this side of the story.
Hey! How are you?
I'll try to get the English part in soon. This is just the many projects I have going, taking time and consciousness away from my graduate school work. Tricky.

Sisters and brothers from Plum Village (Buddhist monastery that Thich Nhat Hanh started in France) will be coming to Japan to offer mindfulness retreats and healing for those affected by the disasters of 3/11. The retreat will be held this weekend, and I am currently organizing a youth Wake Up! event for the 5/19. More on that soon. The video below is in English about the retreat and appeal for funding.
