Wow, I haven't posted anything in English for so long!!!!

I'm in the midst of making an update but its been a several weeks project.

Anyways, I'm going to Australia tomorrow to participate in a retreat with some amazing people. There will be a public event in Byron Bay so if any of you are in that area, or know of anyone who might be interested, let them know.

Join us for a unique, interactive evening in the company of activists from 5 continents who are working towards system change. Learn about what’s underway in India, Brazil, the USA, Japan, Denmark, Mexico and other parts of the world, and why people from such different cultures and geographies view localisation as a promising strategy for meeting the greatest social and ecological challenges of our time.

The main organizer

Helena Norberg-Hodge – Australia/UK

Tokyo Urban Permaculture Website is up and running

Hello from Union Station in Chicago

Just flew in a few days ago to visit my brother at Tillers International (check it out), where he is learning how to farm with oxen, handle horses, weld, make rope, brooms, the list goes on. Yesterday, we went into Detroit and had an insightful tour of economic collapse and urban grassroots renewal by Richard Feldman of the Boggs Center (check it out).  And now heading to the Possibility Alliance (check it out) where my brother used to live, and that I have heard much about. PA seems to be a hub of inspiring people living in sacred integrity with the earth. No electricity, no fossil fuels, simple hand-and-earth-made living. Hard to find much info on them online but I've come to realize that the really amazing things cannot be found easily online.

Meanwhile in Japan, we signed a lease to start a Peace (nonviolence) and Permaculture Dojo for 10 years in Isumi, Chiba prefecture. The educational programs, nonviolent communication 6-day immersion training and permaculture design course have already started on my friend Phil Cashman's site in Southern Chiba. We're going to start renovating the old Japanese thatch-roofed kominka (means old house) and turn it into a guesthouse by April 2017.

The 2.5 acre lot was an old Japanese homestead with a mini cow barn, bamboo grove, fruit trees, rice paddies, and garden. Still off-grid too! More to come about that, but I'm hoping for it to be a refuge and training site for ecologically rooted peace activists. Part of my vision for growing social change infrastructure in Japan. Really hoping to keep the country from fully engaging in war. But, the military-industrial-complex is powering up and the government is trying their best to change article 9 of our pacifist constitution. We're going to have to get really creative!

And we now have a website! Its mostly Japanese but I squeezed in some English.
http://www.tokyourbanpermaculture.com/

Here is the English message

Welcome to you English-reading friend!

GRATITUDE FIRST
Thank you for finding your way to this website!
Thank you internet for making this connection possible!
Thank you Earth for being a most generous host!

ABOUT Tokyo Urban Permaculture
Tokyo Urban Permaculture (TUP) is a project that Kai Sawyer started around 2011. He was a second-year permaculture apprentice at the Bullocks Permaculture Homestead when the Fukushima nuclear meltdown tragically occurred. He decided to venture into the heart of the problem, Tokyo, to explore what seeds of hope he could grow in the busy radioactive world that he was born in.

You can read more about Kai and the Bullocks Permaculture Homestead on his first blog: Living Permaculture (about)

TUP started out as a place for Kai to share permaculture, compassionate communication (aka Nonviolent Communication), mindfulness (based on Thich Naht Hanh’s teachings), systems thinking through games, gift economy, and creative activism from primarily from the Bay Area of California. Workshops and presentations are primarily offered as a gift (more about the gift economy here) and anybody is welcome to join. Interventions and experiments such as guerrilla gardening, street meditations, youth climate change actions, and developing community gardens have been a central part of TUP activities.

2015
A crowd-sourced and crowd-funded book-like zine, Urban Permaculture Guide, was published and has become one of the most read permaculture books in Japan. See Living Permaculture (book) for more.

2016
After several years of soil-building, TUP has now blossomed into a community of social change growers exploring how can we co-create a culture that is moved by love for the earth and peace. Activities are not limited to “Tokyo”, “Urban”, or “Permaculture”, but the focus is on regenerating Tokyo into a urban culture that supports life rather than consuming it.

Some concrete projects include
this website!

  • nonviolent communication activist training retreat

  • PAWA Permaculture Design Course (with Phil Cashman and Kyle Holtzer)

  • Commune Garden: a rooftop community garden in Omotesando, Tokyo

  • Japan-centered permaculture design manual in Japanese (just sprouting)

  • Permaculture and Nonviolence Dojo for training Japanese activists (just sprouting)

For most recent updates see the Tokyo Urban Permaculture blog.

In some ways, TUP is just a name, a blog and website, a flag where people can come to for healing, hope, and action. The movement in Japan is much larger than TUP, and we are just another branch of an inspiring earth-wide movement. Nothing more exciting than this!

Since our focus is on supporting non-English-literate Japanese, most information is in Japanese…until we find someone passionate about translating for us. We love connecting with the English-literate too so feel free to write us or support us in any way! Just be warned that few of us are bilingual and so our responses might be rather slow. Reminders are welcome if you don’t get a response in a week or something like that. Since we are all volunteers slowly building up our social infrastructure, our capacity is still quite limited.

Thanks for reading and happy to be on the planet with you!

moved by love
Kai and the inspiring TUP team

URBAN PERMACULTURE INSPIRATIONS! part 2

日本語はこっち

Here are some inspiring TEDx talks on urban gardening and more! I think its really important to propagate not just gardens and gardeners, but stories of possibility. Growing a culture that encourages life! And while these are both amazing projects with powerful speakers, there are billions of stories and acts of active hope that are happening across the globe. Keep spreading the stories, and planting seeds.

RON FINLEY: A Guerilla Gardener in South Central LA
Ron Finley plants vegetable gardens in South Central LA — in abandoned lots, traffic medians, along the curbs. Why? For fun, for defiance, for beauty and to offer some alternative to fast food in a community where "the drive-thrus are killing more people than the drive-bys."

PAM WARHURST: How We Can Eat Our Landscapes
What should a community do with its unused land? Plant food, of course. With energy and humor, Pam Warhurst tells at the TEDSalon the story of how she and a growing team of volunteers came together to turn plots of unused land into communal vegetable gardens, and to change the narrative of food in their community.

BRITTA RILEY: A Garden In My Apartment

Britta Riley wanted to grow her own food (in her tiny apartment). So she and her friends developed a system for growing plants in discarded plastic bottles — researching, testing and tweaking the system using social media, trying many variations at once and quickly arriving at the optimal system. Call it distributed DIY. And the results? Delicious.

more to come.....much more!

Gift Ecology Pilgrimage (updated)

日本語はこちら
*this article is being edited so it is impermanent. Please do check out the links!

The Great Adventure begins!
A pilgrimage of 14 Japanese adventurers to places founded on the principles of ecology, compassion, and social transformation in the magical Bay Area. An experiment that will change our lives in some way, and shine light on what is possible. This will be a journey of hope and inspiration, full of cross-cultural pollination.

WHAT I DO (for context)

These visits to the West Coast are an important source of inspiration for my “work” in Japan. In Japan, the title that I go by (and that people know me by) is 共生革命家 (Kyoosei kakumeeka).  First two characters mean co-existence or inter-being, next two mean revolution, the last is home. My purpose in life has increasingly become focused on figuring out how I can best serve humanity and the earth. I love it, what could be more meaningful than that?!!! More and more, I feel guided on this path of interdependence and liberation.

My work consists of a variety of experiments in and around Tokyo that include guerilla seed planting,  guerrilla gardening, meditation flash mobs..... I also teach permaculture, compassionate communication (based on Nonviolent Communication), mindfulness, facilitation skills, gift ecology, etc. I've been experimenting with a gift economy based livelihood and that has been a really interesting journey. Almost all my workshops/presentations have no price set, there is no obligation to pay, its my gift. In fact, I want everybody to know how to live ecologically and compassionately, so I'm trying to remove as many barriers to that knowledge as possible. Money is often a major divider, so without a price, I'll get people who lost their jobs, students, professionals, and even bankers! But, I do invite people to support me if they like what I teach, what I do, or just are inspired to contribute. I was transformed by Goenka's vipassana meditation centers. They practice a pay-it-forward system, and so your 10-day meditation retreat (clean sleeping space, food, service) is already paid for! Definitely try it out!

Since I stopped living on farms, and now do my social change experiments in Tokyo and across the Pacific, I've moved back to a higher consumption (lower material production) life-style. (if you are interested in how I used to live, click here) But, I have this belief that if the work I do is meaningful, somehow I will be supported to do it. It's been 2 years, I'm thriving, and I have a diverse global support network! So this gift economy works, or more accurately, I am alive and it is the path I am now on. I'm meeting more and more people who live and practice the gift economy, like Mark Boyle in England, Pancho in Oakland, Nipun Mehta in Santa Clara, and numerous more. My brother just moved to the Possibility Alliance, which seems to be a major hub for gift economics. Exciting!!!

*more on my experiments and books

THE TOUR

With my friend Eri Suzuki, we planned a tour to meet amazing sustainability activists and experience life-regenerating sites. The tour was primarily focused on urban permaculture, but then I added in agroecology, and then just had to integrate the gift economy. There is a lot of overlap here, and for me these are the foundations for the next era of humanity. The tour is also a "gift" in itself to the participants. 12 Japanese have come together to visit these sites with us and explore the gift economy, or as I now refer to it, the gift ecology. Its not just an economy. Life is a gift, air is a gift, water is a gift, sun is a gift, trees are a gift. Without these gifts, our lives would not be possible. Our economy needs these foundational "free" inputs. Without the ecosystem, our economy would not exist. So we all live in a gift ecology, but often our minds are heavily focused on the conventional economy, and one-on-one exchange. People are always giving us things too, and we are always giving others things, no matter how "poor" we are. In fact, our parents (and/or care-givers) give us so much for us to be alive today. Our life is a gift or the Earth and our human family.

Back to the tour. So, we took a leap of faith, and while there are real costs that require money, we decided to gift it to the tour participants in a similar manner as my workshops. They have no obligation to pay, but they are invited to contribute if their heart is inspired. And we extended the invitation to everybody. Lots of people are contributing to us for this experiment, people who have generously donated money, people who have offered their homes, people who are excited to make us a delicious meal, people who are in Japan helping coordinate logistics and media. It's quite the trip! It really feels like an ecology of goodness.

Our hope is that this will create a solid ripple in our consciousness. The tour is just one experiment in a larger global movement. Eri and I are changing, the participants will probably be transformed, those that give to the tour will probably experience something special, and the story will spread beyond our imagination. We are creating a new reality together. Join us! You can contribute to this experiment, start your own, or join one of the amazing people/places in the links below. The transformation comes from giving. We live in a gift ecology. Yay!

Contact us if you are wanting to be involved in someway (or leave a comment). Our response might be a bit slow but we'll make sure to get back. And if you want to contribute financially, you can donate to the experiment too! Click on the Donate button on the right of the blog and please leave a comment (we want to know what moved you!)

JUNE 1st Patriot Act Renewal Day w/ John Oliver

Wanted to share this important and comical video. The topic of surveillance and corruption is such a critical topic, but I want to share this video because it illustrates something deeper about our culture and society (the whole "dick pic" approach). Its funny and sad at the same time. I'm also deeply intrigued by the power of COMEDY, and the combination of comedy x media x social change. Its important to laugh.
