Permaculture Convergence 2011

Pacific North West Permaculture Convergence 2011

This year it will be held on Oct. 14-16th in Oregon, at the Columbia County Fairgrounds and in Portland. The theme for this year is "Finding Common Cause...expanding both our thinking and our networks to include a broader range of allies and partners to work with for making those deep changes."

The Topical tracks include
-Education and Teaching
-Permaculture in Action
-Social Permaculture
-Transforming Cities, Neighborhoods and Suburbia
-Rural Permaculture
-Finding Common Cause
-Communing with Nature
Last year I found the following sessions particularly stimulating
  • Invisible Structures and Group Process panel
  • Permaculture, Plant Communities and Stewardship with Rick Valley
  • Permaculture Collaborations with Tibetan Refugees and HAM radio with Jonathan Scherch
  • and of course Mark Lakeman's keynote speech which is always inspiring
My hope is that there will be fresh solid exploration of urban permaculture and social permaculture this year.

Here is the website

Here are my personal questions about the permaculture movement at the moment,
-How do we evolve permaculture from a subculture to the masses?
City Repair and Transition Town movements seem to be on the right track,
and books like Gaia's Garden seem to be reaching a larger more mainstream audience,
but there is still a long way to go.
-How can permaculture transform consumerist culture?
-How can we train more disaster relief permaculture practitioners?
And what would they be able to do that is different from current disaster relief personnel?

At the moment, I'm trying to figure out how do I grow food and live safely in an area contaminated with radioactive cesium. Most might just say, "you don't." But, as I have no easy choices in my life at the moment, I want to go deeper than that answer. It sucks but its a reality for many. Just like war. We need to deal with it.
So, what insights and practical applications does permaculture offer for these situations?

  1. Kai, I read this:

and all I can say is that I feel literally SICK with sadness. Gut level. Peace be with you, and much love.

  2. Thanks Andy. It makes me sick that we live in a globalised toxic culture, but I've been blessed to have met many proactive amazing change-makers. What is, is what is. What can be, is what excites me.

  3. OK, Kai, I found a snippet of an answer to the cesium thing, at least. Here's a short quote from this blog, but I REALLY recommend you read the whole post, and from things I've read, this guy is VERY well informed. Here's the quote, and then the blog link:

Apple Pectin Reduces Cesium 137 load by over 62% in one month:
Following the Chernobyl accident, a great deal of research went into how to efficiently remove radionuclides from the body. Since then, decades of research from around the world has shown that pectin is extremely effective at removing radioactive cesium from the body.
